Imagine you’re driving in the car when all of the sudden you smell something that knocks the wind out of you. You realize your little one went number two as you were driving to your destination. Not wanting them to sit in it, you pull over at the next stop to change their diaper. As you pull your child out of their car seat, you see the horror that is now upon you. There is poop ev-er-y where. You then realize that you don’t have a spare change of clothes for your little one, and you feel helpless. “I should have had a spare change of clothes with me”, you think to yourself. But what if you did? Don’t be ill prepared like me. Stock up on these essential items for your diaper bag before it’s too late!
What You Should Always have in your diaper bag
No matter the age of your child, some items should always be in there. Yes, you obviously know that you need diapers, wipes, and a changing pad, but there are a few other essentials to keep in mind.
Change of clothes. Make sure you always have a spare change of clothes (if not two) for your child. No matter what the age there will always be spills and accidents, so it’s important to have something on hand.
Pacifier Clips. I would always make sure you have a pacifier clip that stays in your bag with you. When they are babies, you can use them for the pacifier, but when they get older, they are super useful on other items such as teether toys and snack holders. Because of this I like to get durable clips that will last a long time. One of my favorite one’s is from Peas in a Pod Baby Boutique. I was able to customize the colors to whatever I wanted, and it’s so durable it will last a life time.
Medicine. Make sure to always have medicine with a syringe because you never know when that cold or tooth is going to hit. There have been so many times that I have needed this and didn’t have it.
Diaper Bag Essentials for Babies
Burp Clothes and Swaddles. And I would say a few of them! Babies are constantly spitting up and having blow outs, so making sure they have a swaddle that is nice and clean is key. We were always lovers of the Aden and Anais brand because they are durable and super light weight and comfortable. In fact our daughter is so in love with them, that they are now her comfort object and I am STILL carrying them around with me.
Pacifier and Pacifier Holder. Make sure to have two extra pacifiers with you at all times. They are constantly dropping them and getting them dirty, so you will appreciate the extras. Also make sure you have a good holder for them so they don’t get dirty in your bag.
Diaper Bag Essentials for Toddlers:
Teethers, teethers, and more teethers. Oh my gosh toddlers just chew on EVERYTHING! I like to make sure I have an assortment of teethers in my bag with me at all times. Our favorite ones have been the Sophia the Giraffe, as well as the ones we have purchased from Peas in a Pod Baby Boutique. They are all hand made, and created with your little one in mind. My daughter has seriously loved every single one.
An extra sweater. You never know when the temperature will drop or when you will be in a cold building. It’s best to keep one on hand just in case.
Band Aids and Neosporin. It seems like toddlers are forever on the move, and consequently, always hurting themselves. Make sure you are stocked up on these!
Eating Essentials. I can’t tell you the amount of times we have been out and about and decided to grab something to eat. Make sure to always keep one bib in your bag in times like these, and either disposable travel placemats, or a reusable option like the EZPZ mats. We use the EZPZ mats because we are also able to use them at home.
Diaper Bag Essentials for You
Now I would consider myself a minimalist when it comes to purses and bags. I’ve never liked carrying around something heavy or bulky. So when I am out with my child, I like to make my diaper bag my purse as well. Who has time to be carrying around two bags?
I don’t keep much in my diaper bag for myself, because let’s be real, there’s barely any room! My go to items are my sunglasses, wallet, phone, and tampons/pads. Nothing extra special here.
Sunglasses. For my sunglasses, I am in love with these Wayfarer Raybans. Mainly because I just love the look and style of Raybands in general, but these FOLD UP into the size of a square, which is so amazing because again, there is little to no room for you in the diaper bag.
Your wallet. I usually like my wallet to match my bag (we’ll get more on the bags later). I also wanted a wallet that could stand alone in case I needed to run somewhere quickly, I could just grab my wallet and be set to go. I opted for this black leather Coach wallet to do the trick. I have had it for over a year now and it still works perfect. It has plenty of spots for my various cards, cash, and change. My phone can also slip in there as well which I love for when I’m on the go!
My favorite diaper bags
My go to diaper bag is my Coach one because it’s most my style. But there is also value in having a few different ones depending on the occasion. For instance, when I don’t have my stroller, and therefor no compartment to store my bag, it can be a pain to lug around. Here are my favorite diaper bags out there:
